India Residency

I applied for a residency in India for a month in the later half of this year.

Unfortunately I did not succeed in the application, but it has sparked interest to search out other residencies that are out there and see what the possibilities would be in getting a residency.

Someone suggested to me that I should look at Morocco for patterns.

I have done a little bit of research.

So far I found a web site that tells you about residencies, although it is slightly cryptic in not really telling you anything, but leads you onto other residencies on another website. Not my favourite type of site where you get on one just to be transferred to another!

What there is also is a plethora of opportunities out there for artist residencies within Australia and overseas. I was not able to find much in the way of funding for these residencies as some of the best opportunities didn’t have funding available to them. This would mean further research in the realm of grants and other fundraising methods to get to these residencies.

I really feel that I need something to kick start me into a new realm of opportunity and inspiration – whether that be in the field of jewellery or sculpture. For me, they inform one another.

Ordering…… What have I forgotten?

My semester at the BIA started last week.

It is always a bit of a surprise to see how many people I have in a class as there are always people who sign up for classes at the last minute and I am never really sure how many I will have until the day. This does make it a little difficult in regards to materials orders and I always try to order just a little bit more without going over the budget!

I have decided on another tack this time around.

As most of the students are just learning new skills and I am teaching them new techniques rather than making something straight away, I have been able to adjust my ordering so that I can use more base metals in the beginning. This will then allow some more of the budget to go towards silver in the final projects that people will be working on.

So far, this is working and I was able to cover a lot of ground last week just using aluminium, brass and copper. Even for the advanced students who were learning fold forming.

It was actually the first time that I had introduced the students to aluminium, so they were learning about a new metal from the offset. It is quite a usable material although you cannot solder it, cold joining has it’s advantages. Although one of my students thinks that rivets are a way of cheating!??? Must be whole “avoiding soldering”.

My aim is to also provide some new tools and equipment to the students this semester so using part of the budget to order these is essential, especially when tools seem to walk out the door mysteriously and disappointingly! Apart of this effort will be out Urban Mine Project that I will have to organise again for this semester, which culminates in an exhibition of the works people have created.

I am hoping that it will be a much bigger success as I plan on allowing people more time to create more substantial pieces of jewellery and small objects. My aim is to get a draw bench for the studio by the end of the semester at the latest! As long as no more tools go walking we should be on track for that !

There are so many plans for the BIA studio that I have to stop myself, but it does not help when you are going through the catalogues of the suppliers to see what you need to order and you flick passed something that you think would be completely appropriate for the studio!!
